Spectroscopy is an important class of experimental technique that is widely used for the study of matter. X-ray spectroscopy and, in particular, x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) [voir Figure 1] is often used for the study of warm dense matter (WDM) as it gives valuable information on the electronic density of states. In order to obtain such spectra, we usually perform pump-probe experiments often on large-scale national and international facilities like the European synchrotron research facility (ESRF) or the European x-ray free-electron laser (EuXFEL). We also have some active collaborations with other groups on this topic for instance at the CELIA in Bordeaux or the ESRF in Grenoble. In order to complement the experimental results, we perform ab initio calculations of WDM based on the density functional theory (DFT) using the ABINIT code combined with molecular dynamics simulations and linear response theory providing important insights for the interpretation of such spectra.
